Tanzania’s Premier Defends Cuba, Zimbabwe Against Outlandish Sanctions

By Staff Writers and Agencies

Tanzania Premier Kassim Majaliwa has joined President John Magufuli and other nations in the world to call for an end to sanctions on Zimbabwe and Cuba as they hinder the two countries development and progress leaving negative impacts on innocent common citizens.

Addressing more than 120 Non-Align Movement (NAM) countries in Baku, Azerbaijan yesterday, the Premier said sanctions on Zimbabwe and Cuba cripples the determination towards economic development, access to trade, investment and well-being of their people.

The Premier said Tanzania encourages the international community in constructive dialogue towards total removal of Cuba embargo and sanctions in Zimbabwe for economic and transformation and benefit of their people. In May this year, while in Zimbabwe, President Magufuli called for an end to sanctions on Zimbabwe, saying they hindered development and progress. Tanzania reiterated the position during SADC meetings.

“This embargo should be reconsidered and removed, so the people of Zimbabwe can enjoy their life and develop their country,” President Magufuli had said. This week, China joined President Magufuli and the chorus of Southern African Development Community (SADC) to argue Western powers to lift sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

The Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, H.E Wang Ke, said at the special convocation held at the University of Dar es salaam, titled thus “Economic Sanctions and the fate of Development in Africa”, that unilateral sanctions against Zimbabwe have no basis of the international law, lacks legitimacy and rationality.
Premier Majaliwa is in Baku to represent President Magufuli in the NAM meetings. Tanzania is known for its vocal position on issues affecting NAM member states since the times of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

Tanzania's Most Peaceful Election: Why Opposition Got Flabbergasted?

By John Njoroge:  The ruling party and President John Pombe Magufuli are both leading by far (update: final results are now out, see an update note at the end of the article), trailing the weak opposition in Tanzania following the 28th October General elections.              President John Pombe Magufuli of Tanzania As usual, as the results were pouring out, the oppostion parties, activists and western propaganda machination, all over, resorted to one simple phallacy; whether the election was free and fair. Actually I heard the opposition rejecting the results on the basis of some irregularities.  Let me address that first before I share what I believe to be the reasons for weaker oppostion this time around in Tanzania.  The term free and fair has no one meaning in electoral governance across the world; countries abhor diverse socio-political systems and so is how they manage their elections. The fact that all political parties too...
